Datasource helped a publicly-traded pharmaceutical company achieve high operational performance by implementing an end-to-end financial data warehouse and BI solution with a data management program.
To better serve senior management and the CFO’s department, this pharmaceutical company set out to create a single database (data warehouse) that would combine information from sources such as JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (E1), Cognos Planning, Timekeeping, and several custom finance applications to provide a view of the data that was cleansed, standardized, complete, and current.
Furthermore, this client required that the system be readily accessible by a much broader set of users and be capable of quickly answering more complex financial questions that had previously gone unanswered.
The team consisted of:

The first step of the project was to better understand the challenges that the customer was facing and understand how the technology environment was structured. The project began with about 45 interviews covering a broad cross-section of Executives, middle management, analysts, and technical subject matter experts. This allowed the team to fully understand how the existing processes worked, key challenges, and to begin to craft a solution that would address the business need directly.
The data warehouse was designed as a four layer system (stage, conform, base, and mart). Data quality was ensured through a series of rules that applied in the conform layer of the solution. Informatica was employed to generate the load processes to support data integration. Datasource Consulting’s “ScheduleBI” solution was tailored to support sequencing and scheduling on the nightly, weekly, monthly, and on-demand load processes.
Cognos was employed to provide Reporting and Analytic capabilities to a breadth of end-users. A PowerCube was created to support month-close analytics using Cognos Analysis Studio. A relational package was designed to support planning, forecasting, and other ad-hoc analytics. A dashboard and guided analysis were developed in close coordination with the intended end-users to provide broad-user support.
Training was conducted to ensure that knowledge transfer had occurred prior to decommissioning old systems during the parallel deployment.
